Día 10: ¿Qué es el Ayuno de Daniel? / Day 10: What it the Daniel Fast?

-----Español-----
(for English scroll down)

DIA 10

-Daniel 10:2-3(a) (NVI)

«…“Danos de comer sólo legumbres, y de beber sólo agua.”»
-Daniel 1:12(b) (NVI)

DAY 10

WEEK 2 OF OUR
21 Days of Fasting and Prayer 2014 for UNITY!

I will take advantage of this moment to congratulate and encourage those of you who have stayed the course of this fast for over a week! It’s great to know that there are others joined with us in a consecration attitude towards God. I would also like to welcome those that have decided to join us for the next two weeks. The time that we dedicate to God as a living sacrifice is so very valuable, even if you weren’t able to do all 21 days. Suring the time we have left we are going after more from God and we believe that He will do great things in us!

WEEK 2 FOCUS:
  • A spirit of patience and tolerance with our fellow man.
  • A strong manifestation of forgiveness in our families and church groups.
  • Restoration of important relationships that have been broken.

Note: We’ve received contact from several of you asking for more information about the Daniel Fast. Because of this, I have decided to dedicate today to sharing the information I have learned about it. Below is a summary of further information for all of you who, as well as all of us in the CDC team, are following the Daniel Fast.

---

¿WHAT IS THE DANIEL FAST?

«At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips…»

-Daniel 3:2-3(a) (NIV)

«…“Give us nothing but vegetables [pulse] to eat and water to drink.”»
-Daniel 1:12(b) (NIV)

“Pulse” from the Hebrew word, “zeroa” = that which grown from a seed that is sowed

The Daniel Fast is one of the most popular prolonged fasts for individuals as well as groups. It allows us to pass several days of consecration by withholding from certain foods that we may normally enjoy. It does not limit the amount of food to be eaten, but the type of foods to be eaten. This particular fast limits our meals to fruit, vegetables, grains, and water. None must contain sugar or any chemical products. Please read your food packaging labels to make sure you don’t accidently consume these, if you are doing a full Daniel Fast.

For Daniel, the time he fasted (as narrated in Daniel chapter 10) was as a gesture of seeking God profoundly for an answer for three full weeks. We are linked to that very sense of seeking for God so earnestly, this time asking God for the unity of His people. We have faith that we will certainly see the fruit of our pursuit of God this year. Amen!

Below is a detailed description of that you must ear and note at during this Daniel Fast period.

Día 7 - 9: Permanecer Escogido / Day 7 - 9: Stay Chosen

Mientras tanto, busca a Dios, encuéntralo y escúchalo.

Day 7 - 9
STAY CHOSEN

«In the church at Antioch there were some prophets and teachers. They were Barnabas, Simeon (also called ["the black man"]), Lucius (from the city of Cyrene), Manaen (who had grown up with King Herod), and Saul. These men were all serving the Lord and fasting when the Holy Spirit said to them, "Appoint Barnabas and Saul to do a special work for me. They are the ones I have chosen to do it."
So the church fasted and prayed. They laid their hands on Barnabas and Saul and sent them out.»
-Acts 13:1-3 (ERV)

Yesterday I shared what I learned from God about who are the called and who are really the chosen. I shared the story of how I was spending intimate time with him and he whispered these precious words, "You are called because I want you so much, but your are chosen because you want me so much." By hearing this I learned that God makes an invitation to all his children to become chosen. However, it is us who decide to accept that invitation by passionately giving our lives to pursue His presence. I have also learned that God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

Even after receiving such a powerful revelation in my life, I still had to learn to stay chosen. It is very easy to get right back into our comfort zone and ignore the Holy Spirit. Remember to be chosen is greatly bound to an attitude of your heart. If we bring the center of our focal point to back I', 'me' and 'mine' instead of God, that attitude changes. And we slowly fall back into a place of complacency and comfort, thus again becoming just called and not chosen.

Human beings have a tendency for survival. Focusing on ourselves comes naturally. Even at birth we come into the world screaming for our own individual needs to be met. As we grow older we seem to desperately seek independence, self-sufficiency and to stand out. It's plain and simple. As humans we are selfish. Yet, how wonderful is our God that he still has the patience, mercy and grace to invite us again and again to trust and depend on Him!

The kingdoms of the world are founded on independence, but the Kingdom of God is founded solely on Him. Our total dependence on Him is what keeps us aligned to His Kingdom, and thus to His will. I prefer to be aligned with Heaven and depend on God, which will always render a much greater reward than any other thing.

In Acts 13:1-3 we see an account of five men who were prophets/teachers of the primal church: Barnabas, Simeon (the black man), Lucius (from Cyrene), Manaen (who grew up with king Herod), and Saul. They all sought God with prayer and fasting. Yet God said that those chosen for the mission were only Saul and Barnabas--two out of the five.

When I read this I asked the Holy Spirit why only these two were picked, when they all seemed to be chosen (according to what I had learned from the Holy Spirit earlier). The Holy Spirit, as patient and sweet as always prompted me to read again. As I did I noticed something rather peculiar. This Scripture is specific as to where Lucius was from, what Simeon looked like, and who Manaen knew. Usually when the Scripture sheds light on details such as these it's because they are very relevant. Usually, when someone is widely characterized in that way (i.e. 'Jose the Mexican', 'Mary, the president's pal', or 'Johnny the red head') it is because 1) they have allowed it, and 2) they believe it to be who they are. Therefore, everyone else does. It becomes their identity.

I can just imagine Simeon with his beautiful chocolate-colored skin, but perhaps feeling a self-conscious for being physically different to the rest of the people around him. Maybe Lucius was one of these patriot-type guys, perhaps proud of being from one of the great 5 cities that comprised ancient Greece's 'Pentaolis.' And I can see Manaen's chest inflate every time someone asked him about his childhood buddy who was now King Herod. But then, that is only m y imagination. Reality is that for some reason the Bible gives such specific identifiers for each of these three. It is very probable that their lives revolved around how others saw them. On the other hand, Saul and Barnabas were the only ones that did not seem to have an identifier other then who they were, God's sons, prophets and teachers. I'm sure that this is indicative that Saul and Barnabas were 'over themselves.' I believe that they were no longer focused on there 'I' but focused on God as their true identity, provision and priority.

They were all chose, yet not all of them were ready to set out on the mission that God had for them. God needed someone who did not have mental obstacles or heart barriers that could hinder their focus on Jesus and His will.

Perhaps you have received a word from God promising that you'd do great things for His Kingdom.
Maybe you're asking yourself why it doesn't happen. Please do not think that you are not chosen. Remember that being chosen is determined by your burning desire to give yourself away in order to pursue the presence of God. The fact that you may not have seen your mission unfold just yet only means one thing: you aren't quite ready to be commissioned yet. Ask yourself these questions: Do I think more of myself than God? Does where I come from, what I look like, or who I know mean more to me than pursuing God's perfect will for my life? If your answer to any of these was 'yes', then you have some more preparation left to endure before being propelled into your mission for God. In the mean time, seek God, find Him, and listen to His every word. He is certainly the best teacher and will show you exactly what steps you must take to advance in your walk with Him.

I pray that this blog acts as a catalyst for us all to understand that our true identity is not what we do, where we're from, or who we know. Our identity is Christ, and nothing else. We depend on God, and no one else. We are guided by the Holy Spirit, and no one else. This way we will be chosen and stay chosen.

Today's Prayer:
"Dear Lord. Thank you for opening my eyes to the truth about being chosen. My desire is to be one of them and stay that way, in your perfect will. Today I renounce to the lie that my identity is anything other than you. My lineage comes from you, and my life is yours. My identity is Christ, and nothing else. I depend on God, and nothing else. I am guided by the Holy Spirit, and no one else. Give me the courage to come out of my comfort zone and obey you in whatever you ask of me. I know that you are a good God and you will never give me a burden heavier than I can carry, or a harder mission than I can fulfill in you. In Jesus name, I pray and stay chosen, Amen."

Esa vida me llevó a tocar fondo y allí me alcanzó Dios.

Y yo rindo mi vida nuevamente a ti. Amen."

Day 6
BE CHOSEN

«"For many are called, but few are chosen."»
-Matthew 22:14 (NLT)

Who is called? Who is chosen? What makes us one or the other?
I am very curious. As such, I tend to ask myself questions about what I hear. I'm always finding ways to learn and enquire about my questions. I grew up in church. You could see little me at service Sunday after Sunday listening to sermons about the Word of God and spiritual growth. Usually, I wasn't conformed to simply accepting what the preacher said, just because. As I grew in my relationship with God each sermon prompted me to seek for greater meaning of what I'd heard in the Scriptures. It's how I'm wired.

One of the Scriptures that really caught my attention—and frankly I really didn't 'get'—was Matthew 22:14: "For many are called, but few are chosen." For many years I thought that being called or being chosen depended on some kind of God-stamp we're born with or not. In my mind, I thought that if you weren't born chosen, it was very unlikely or even impossible to achieve greater things in life. Moreover, I certainly did not consider myself chosen.

As years passed and I reached my college season, I went through a rebellious phase in which I acted very badly before God. I lived a double life of hidden sin while I was the worship leader at my church. That way of life dragged me to rock bottom, and God found me there. I had an encounter with the Father's much undeserved love, mercy, and grace. Still, the guilt of having failed God haunted me. For a very long time my sense of failure had me considered myself not worthy of God's love, not realizing that Jesus' sacrifice had already redeemed all my sin. I later learned that the key to break free was in three things: forgiving myself, accepting that God loved me regardless of what I'd done, and depending entirely on God to stay away from that sin.

In the process of being restored from my past I began to truly enjoy my time with God and depending on Him. I began to experience my dreams and desires—such as making music for God—come to pass, just as it says in Psalm 37:4 "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."When I had already recorded a couple of albums, I could see how God began to expand my horizons. At this point I could feel how the Lord propelled me out to minister to nations... and I feared.

My greatest of fears was that new levels of influence could 'get to my head,' and somehow hinder the beautiful nearness I had finally found with the Holy Spirit. I though that I was in danger of being affected by pride, the root of all sin that had distanced me from him in the past. I also felt the weight of the responsibility of being God's instrument to bless nations, and I considered that someone else, anyone else, was better than me for this mission.

One day, as I spoke to God, I expressed my fears to him. I could feel him listening and I asked, "Lord, why choose me when there are so many in the world better and more qualified than I for this? What's so special about me that you call me chosen, and not just called?" Immediately, I heard the his voice as a sweet whisper in my right ear, as if he had sat down beside me and said, "You are called because I want you so much, but you are chosen because you want me so much."

As I listened to those words my eyes filled with tear and I finally understood. God calls us all, but it is those who run to find him with reckless abandon and above all else are his chosen. God has made an invitation to all of his children to cross the lines of our comfort and be willing to surrender it all—our dreams and personal goals—in order to love him and want him more than our very life.

With this I learned that being chosen is not about influence, fame, or any success we can achieve in this earth, but rather that our name is well-known in Heaven as one who has conquered the Father's heart with surrender, trust, and unconditional love to him and his people. This is being a true chosen one. God's heart yearns for us to cross over from being called into being chosen. The step is ours to make.

Today's prayer:
"Dear Father. I praise you for your mercy and grace, enough to extend the invitation of becoming one of your chosen. I want to cross the line from being mere called to being your chosen. You are the source of all life including mine. Especially mine. And I surrender it back to you. Help me to get out of my comfort zone in order to find you. I will no longer be on the sidelines. I will want you more than ever before, starting now. Reveal yourself to me today, as a Father would to his chosen child. Amen."

Día 5
ESCUCHA

Sigue conversando.

Day 5
LISTEN

«Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to angry.»
-James 1:19 (NLT)

«Check out everything, and keep only what is good. Throw out anything tainted with evil.»
-1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 (MSG)

"The most important thing in communication is not who speaks, but who listens." I heard this eye-opening phrase spoken by my good friend and professional communicator, Cesar Vega-Ayala. I must    confess, I hadn't seen it that way before. I was one to usually put focus on the message, more than to whom the message was intended.

One of my more recurring activities these days is traveling on airplanes. When I fly, I rarely have time to chat during the flight. Instead, I usually focus on working, reading or catching up on sleep, since my hectic schedule sometimes robs me of those precious snoozing hours. This time, I had my laptop open and ready to write my blog for that day. Yet, something was different. A very nice man sat next to me. He had a good sense of humor and was very intelligent. His demeanor was soft and his words were kind. We got to talking and he told me his name, Ahmed, He also shared about how he came from Bangladesh. And how he met his beautiful fiancé and hoped to marry her soon. As he spoke of his life, his smile was genuine and unique.

Later he saw me typing and asked me if I was a writer to which I replied, "I wouldn't say that much. It's just something for my blog." And he asked me, "Is this what you do? Are you a pro blogger?" Of course my answer was no. Still, I could see the more curiosity blooming in his eyes as he looked at my screen and said, "What do you blog about?" That was a tough one. I try not to "Jesus-ize" my casual conversations, to avoid sounding too preachy. I'd rather people realize that I love God by the way I walk the walk, not necessarily the way I talk the talk, if you know what I mean. Still, when under such direct questions, there is no better thing than a wise direct answer. I said, "I'm a worship leader and I blog about my relationship with God." Bam. Just like that.

His head nodded as if in agreement, and his eyes invited more. So I did say more. I explained in plain terms that there were a group of people that followed me on social media and we all wanted to better our relationship with God. And for the sake of doing my part in that, I made a call to worship and seek God through 21 days of praying a fasting. Not for a purpose other than to unite in seeking God. He again nodded and said, "That's great! I'm Muslim, and we fast too." Oh, boy. In microseconds I though of so many different ways that this conversation can go into an odd direction. Still I could feel the still small voice of the Holy Spirit saying, "It's ok. Carry on with the conversation. I want to show you something."

I immediately said, "Yes! I've heard of that. How do you do it?" Right away a light twinkled in his eye, and I knew that my acknowledgement of something precious to him was very important. More so, it was one thing we had in common, in the midst of so many religious differences. We fasted. He explained his religion, I explained my beliefs. Later I asked him, "So, what is the purpose of your fasting when you do it?" As soon as I asked that, I heard the Lord tell me, "Listen," so I did. Ahmed told me something that will forever stay with me. "We fast for purification, but also to experience what it's like for those who have nothing to eat." Whoa. Now I understood why the Lord wanted me to listen so carefully.

Later that day I repented. I asked God to forgive me. I had been so focused on the vertical aspect of fasting that I had lost track of the horizontal aspects of it. I was shaken by such a deep truth. I know God used Ahmed to speak to me that day. In another time of my life I would have probably not listened to this man much after the word 'muslim." Now, please hear me when I that by this I do not mean that we are to go around listening to everyone and sympathizing with every religion out there. Especially if it goes against our belief in the one true God we love and serve. Jesus is the truth. Yet, sometimes he chooses to use outside sources to speak to us. (Luke 19:40).

We must take time to listen. God is in everything. He can speak to us through just about anything. Let us take hold of the good and discard the bad while keeping our heart open to what he has to say every minute of our day.

Today's prayer:
"Dear Father God. We praise you for you are a great and merciful God. We know that you are everywhere and can choose anything to help us find you. Thank you for teaching us to listen. Help us to be better listeners, that we may hear your voice in our surroundings. We want to honor you by serving others. Give us the ability to listen in order to learn what they need so we can serve you by serving them. In Jesus' name, Amen."
